Australia's climate

Surrounded by the Indian and Pacific Oceans, the Commonwealth of Australia is a country consisting of the mainland, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. The country has a population of over 23 million. Originally inhibited by indigenous Australians for at least 40,000 years, it first became a British settlement in the late 18th century. Today, it is a highly developed and wealthy country. Popular destinations include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Tasmania. Known for its beaches for swimming, surfing, and scuba diving and the Outback, the country is a major tourist destination. Australia's climate varies due to its large geographical size but the largest part of the country is desert or semi-arid. In summer, the average high temperature ranges from 30 to 40°C depending on location. In winter, they average around 20°C, but they can drop to 0°C in some areas. Normally, it rains more in winter than in summer.
