Salzburg’s climate

On the banks of the Salzach River at the northern boundary of the Alps in northwest Austria, Salzburg is the capital of the federal state of the same name and has a population of 148,521. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the “Old Town” is renowned for its baroque architecture and is one of the best preserved city centres north of the Alps. Popular attractions include Salzburg Cathedral, Hohensalzburg Castle, and Mirabell Palace. The city is also known as the birthplace of Mozart and for the film The Sound of Music. Salzburg has a continental climate characterised by warm to hot summers and cold winters. The average high temperature in summer is 24°C though highs may reach over 30°C. In winter, the average high is 3°C with lows near -4°C. Temperatures may drop even further below 0°C. Average annual precipitation is 1,184mm with summer having the highest concentration of rain. The city has an average of 112cm of snow each winter.
