Chile is an American country located in the south-west of South America occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is bordered by Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. It counts a total population of 18 million including Santiago its capital and largest city. One of the most known places in Chile is the Easter Island which is situated in the southeast of the Pacific Ocean and it is one of the most isolated islands. It is famous for its 887 monumental statues, called moai, created by the early Rapanui people many centuries ago. Chile is situated in the southern hemisphere and as a result seasons fall at opposite times of year from the northern hemisphere. The summer months are December, January, and February. So winter months are June, July and August. Chile has a cool, damp climate. Do not expect severe cold here, only at higher elevations. The temperature does vary though due to its large geographic scale. Chile has at least seven major climatic types, starting with desert in the north, to alpine tundra and glaciers in the east and southeast, humid subtropical in Easter Island, Oceanic in the south and a Mediterranean climate in central Chile.
