Situated in Central America, Southwest of Nicaragua and North of Panama, with the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Caribbean Sea to the East, the Republic of Costa Rica counts around 4.5 million people and a quarter of them live in San José, the capital and largest city. The pacific coast is very popular for surfing, for example Esterillos Beach or Hermosa Beach. The island is the perfect place for adventurers as the high altitude trails, tropical rainforests and coastlines can be explored by horse, foot and even kayak. Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate and has no real summers and winters due to its close location to the Equator. The average temperatures range between 21°C and 27°C. Depending on the elevation and location, Costa Rica has different microclimates. Lowlands and coastal areas experience warmer weather while highlands like the city of Monteverde are plunged in fog and cool mist all year round. The Caribbean coast, known as the Gold Coast, receives the least rainfall and the most sunshine.
