Situated along the Nile River in northern Egypt, Cairo is the capital of the country and the largest city in the Arab world and Africa with a population of over 9.1 million in the city and 19.4 million in the metro area. Founded by the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century AD, the land is also associated with Ancient Egypt. It has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab world and the second oldest institution of higher learning in the world. Popular landmarks include Tahrir Square, the Egyptian Museum, Old Cairo, Cairo Tower, and Khan El-Khalili, an ancient bazaar. Cairo has a hot desert climate. However, the city often has high humidity due to the river valley’s effects. Windstorms are frequent in March and April. High temperatures range from 19 to 29°C in winter with lows below 11°C, often dropping to 5°C. In summer, highs above 40°C are uncommon with an average high near 34°C. Average annual precipitation is 24mm though sudden showers can cause flooding.
