The climate in Tallinn

Estonia’s capital and largest city, Talinn has a population of 426,500 and is located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland on the Northern coast of the country. It was elected European Capital of Culture for 2011 and the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tallinn’s former name, Reval, was replaced in 1920 after Estonia became independent. First traces of human settlement found in the city are about 5000 years old. The city has a humid continental climate, meaning warm summers and cold winters with abundant rainfall. February is the coldest month and has an average temperature of -4°C. Temperatures are still below freezing when springs starts but become warmer in May with an average of 15°C. Summers have an average temperature of 20°C.
