Fiji is an island country in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand's North Island. The country comprises an archipelago of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited. The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population of almost 850,000 inhabitants. Suva is the capital and largest city. The majority of Fiji's islands were formed through volcanic activity starting around 150 million years ago. Fiji is the product of volcanic mountains and warm tropical waters. Its majestic and ever-varied coral reefs today draw tourists from around the world. The climate is tropical marine and warm most of the year round with minimal extremes. The warm season is from November to April and the cooler season lasts from May to October. Temperature in the cool season still averages 22 °C.
