The climate in Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland and has a population of 605,523 and a metropolitan population of 1.3 million. It is found in the region of Uusomaa in Southern Finland. It is one of Europe’s major cities and was ranked the eighth best city in which to live in the world. The city was a former trading Town settled by King Gustav I of Sweden during the 16th century. The 1952 Olympic Games held in Helsinki helped the city’s development. It has a humid continental climate. With an average of -5°C in January, temperatures in wintertime are usually higher than in other northern locations due to the influence of the Baltic Sea and Gulf Stream. Days last less than 6 hours during winter with only a few sun rays. In summertime, it enoys 19 hours of daylight per day with an average temperature of 20°C.
