Visiting Berlin

Inside info

Berlin is a beautiful city that has so much to offer, and the good point is it tends to be less expensive than the other big European cities. Even free activities are available! Take the free walking tour that starts at Starbucks Cafe on Unter den Linden. It takes in all the sights in the area, including the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie etc. A very good way to see the major attractions of the city centre without spending any money!Cycling is another great way to tour Berlin. The city has a few steep hills and offers many bicycle paths. Bicycle rentals are available in the city, prices usually vary from €7.50 per day. Touring Berlin by bicycle allows you to see the big tourist sites as well as the nice small streets. If you want more explanation on the sights you visit, you can get guided bike tours (with bike included) on berlinonbike.de.A speciality that can’t be ignored is the currywurst. It's a bratwurst (sausage) covered in ketchup and curry powder. You can find street vendors all over Berlin. Two renowned Currywurst stands are Konnopke's Imbiss below Eberswalder Strasse U-Bahn station on line 2 and Curry 36 opposite the Mehringdamm U-Bahn station in Kreuzberg. The Gauklerfest takes place in the city’s historic centre around the Opera House until August, 2. This festival has become a traditional summer event and features concerts, variety shows, storytelling, arts and crafts, fireworks, and excellent food. (Daily from 2 pm until 2 am)

Travel review

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Berlin. The city has an interesting mix of all and new with historical monuments as well as modern buildings and is constantly evolving. People are really friendly except the ticket controllers in public transportation. Bear in mind that a single ticket is valid for two hours but only in one direction! Take a moment to go to the observation deck of the tallest tower in Germany: the TV tower near Alexanderplatz. Enjoy a cup of coffee at its rotating café spinning 360 degrees in just 30 minutes!Berlin has many museums but my favourite is the Brohan Museum. With its three levels of international art déco and art nouveau pieces, the museum is worth a visit and on top of that, it is quite cheap: approx. £4 and free visits every first Wednesday of the month! Finally, Oranienburger Strasse is the street to go for cheap interesting food from around the world!

Did you know ?

During a visit to Germany in 1963 President John F. Kennedy was greeted with rapturous approval when he said Ich bin ein Berliner (I am a Berliner). Later, this caused some amusement because a Berliner is also a popular name for a type of doughnut
