The climate in Hamburg

Situated on the River Elbe at its confluence with the Alster and Bille in Northern Germany, Hamburg is the second largest city in the country with a population of 1.8 million in the city centre and 5 million in the metro area. An important transport hub and financial centre, the city is a major destination for domestic and foreign tourists. Popular attractions include the City Hall, St. Nicholas’s Church, the many parks, and museums such as the Kunsthalle Hamburg. With its numerous streams, rivers, and canals, the city has more bridges inside the city limits than any other city in the world. It also has more canals than Amsterdam and Venice combined. Hamburg has an oceanic climate that is influenced by its proximity to the coast and marine air from the Atlantic Ocean. The average high temperature is 22°C in summer. In winter, the average high is about 4°C with lows near 1°C. Average annual precipitation is 772mm with rain falling throughout the year. Snowfall is rare and only occurs once or twice each year.
