The climate in Reykjavik

Situated on the southern shore of Faxafloi Bay in southwest Iceland, Reykjavik is the capital and largest city in the country with a population of 120,000 in the city centre and 203,000 in the metropolitan area. First settled by Norseman around AD 870, today, the city is a centre for commerce and government. It is considered one of the cleanest and safest cities in the world. The coastal area is characterised by peninsulas, covers, and islands. Popular destinations include the Blue Lagoon, Hallgrimskirka, which is the largest church in the country, the Icelandic parliament, the Art Museum, the National Museum, and Rahuoholar, a cluster of red volcanic craters. Reykjavik has a subpolar oceanic climate that is moderated by the Gulf Stream’s warm waters. The average high temperature in summer is around 14°C though temperatures can exceed 20°C. In winter, the average high is around 2° with lows near -2°C. Temperatures rarely drop below -15°C. The annual precipitation is 841mm. Due to city’s coastal location, winds and gales are common.
