Situated in northeastern Italy in the Venetian Lagoon, Venice is a city made of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked together by bridges. The city has a population of around 271,000, and both it and the lagoon are a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its beautiful setting, architecture, and artworks. In the old centre, transportation is by water or by foot. Popular destinations in the city include Piazza San Marco, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Grand Canal. Venice is famous for its annual Carnival. Venice has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and very warm summers.
