The story of citizens who grow vegetables and fruits in order to share them with…everyone!

Lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers…what if you could acquire them for free? The concept already exists and was launched in the city of Todmorden near Manchester in the UK. To fight the harsh times of the financial crisis in 2008, people have chosen to reconnect with mother earth but also with each other. They wanted to make peace with themselves and everybody else. So they have developed the idea of sharing. Sounds too good to be true? Maybe. But the ‘incredible edible’ project has in fact been created with great success.

But what exactly is the « incredible edible » concept?

It’s very simple. It consists of cultivating vegetables not on a piece of land located at the far end of your backyard out of sight but in a garden accessible to everyone. Passers-by can then freely help themselves to an abundance of home grown produce and even obtain great gardening advice.

Eating local, pesticide-free food and connecting with others was the recipe for success. Only after a few months, countries all over Europe adopted this appealing concept and were creating their own fruit and vegetable plots in their home towns.

Fancy giving it a go? How can you set up your own “incredible edible”?

The official website will provide information on all the participating countries and cities in the world. Maybe there is one in your own city and you might not even know it. So you’d better find out!
