In the seas to the far south of Tokyo a volcanic eruption has raised…an island! The Japan Meteorological Agency said the island is about 200 metres in diameter and is located just off the coast of Nishinoshima in the Ogasawara chain. Television footage showed heavy black smoke, ash and rocks exploding from a crater. Volcanologists say the island could be quickly eroded away but could also remain permanently.
This kind of phenomena is quite rare in the area. The last volcanic eruption happened nearly 40 years ago.
Japan’s chief government spokesman said they would be happy to have more territory if it becomes a fully-fledged island!
