A mighty earthquake struck off the coast of northern Chile yesterday evening, causing a tsunami alert and the death of at least five people.
The 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck at 8:46 pm local time at about 86 km from the mining area of Iquique, Chile. Gigantic waves hit some areas, causing power cuts, fires and huge landslides and a state of emergency was declared.
At least five people have died, crushed by collapsing walls and heart attacks. Several other inhabitants have been seriously injured.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru where evacuations were also ordered at the seaside of Boca del Rio near the Chilean border.
