Cassini, a flagship-class NASA-ESA-ASI robotic spacecraft sent to the Saturn system, has been studying the planet since 2004 when it was launched.

Today, Cassini is going to take a picture of the earth from the ringed planet and the imaging team thought it would be a good idea if everybody could …wave and smile!

Although we will appear as a small pixel in the final photo, the scientist Carolyn Porcos says it is a perfect time to « celebrate life on the Pale Blue Dot ».

The reflected light from the surface of our blue plane twill take approximately 80 minutes to travel to Saturn, situated  nearly 1.5 billion kms away.

So make sure to wave between 21:27 GMT and 21:42 GMT, the official « waving time » when the spacecraft’s camera will be taking pictures!
