Japan’s largest volcano, Sakurajima, erupted last Sunday. This is the most powerful eruption that has been recorded in the past 10 years.

Sakurajima is currently sending a large cloud of smoke reaching  more than 5,000 metres into the Japanese sky.

The city of Kagoshima, located near the volcano, is now completely paralysed with a thick layer of ash falling continuously over the city. Rail and air transport have temporarily been brought to a halt.
