Get lost in the endless series of galleries containing artefacts from every civilisation on earth in the British Museum. Usually crowd-free, the Enlightenment Rooms in the east wing are fascinating, as much as the magnificent glass roof. Don’t miss the controversial Elgin Marbles, statues that have been removed from the Parthenon in Athens.

• Great Russell Street, 020-7323 8299, WC1, britishmuseum.org. Open Sat-Thur 10am-5.30pm, Fri 10am-8.30pm
