Situated on the western end of the Scandinavian Peninsula, Norway has an extensive coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea, which is also home to its fjords. The country has a population of just over 5 million, making it one of the least densely populated countries in Europe. It is also one of the most prosperous countries in the world. The Norwegian fjords are a popular tourist attraction. Mainland Norway experiences four distinct seasons. The north has a maritime Subarctic climate. The south and west receive more precipitation and have wilder winters compared to the southeast. Oslo has the warmest and sunniest summers but is also cold and snowy in the winter. During the summer, the country experiences long days of sunlight, giving it its name as the “Land of the Midnight Sun”. Conversely, in winter, the country has very little daylight hours.
