Situated in Central Europe, Poland is bordered by the Baltic Sea and many other European countries such as Germany and Slovakia. It has a population of 38.5 million. The capital, Warsaw, is also the largest city. The country was formed in 1025 as The Kingdom of Poland. Despite major destruction of the country during World War II, there are currently 14 heritage sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. In Northern and Western Poland the climate is oceanic and becomes continental towards the south and east. Summers tend to be warm with average temperatures between 18°C and 30°C. On the other hand, winters are usually cold with temperatures between 3°C and -6°C. Winters are drier than summers and the eastern part of the country experiences rainfall throughout the year.
