Porto’s climate

Situated along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is the second largest city in the country with a population of 237,584 in the city centre and over 1.6 million in the metro area. One of the oldest European centres, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose settlement dates back many centuries to the Roman Empire. The city is also known for its famous port wine. Popular landmarks include Porto cathedral, the city hall, Church of Cedofeita, the remnants of the city wall, and the Palacio de Bolsa. Porto has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Porto is one of the wettest cities in Europe with an annual rainfall of 1,236mm. The average high temperature in summer is 25°C, but it can rise as high as 40°C during occasional heat waves. In winter, the average high is 14°C with lows near 5°C.
