Romania is a country located at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe, bordering on the Black Sea. It is the eighth largest country of the European Union by area, and has the seventh largest population of the European Union with 20,121,641 people. Its capital and largest city is Bucharest - the sixth largest city in the EU. The variety of the Romanian landscape, which combines high mountains with hills, plains and a unique delta, corresponds to a diversity also reflected in their customs and traditions which can be observed on the façade of the old buildings in the numerous medieval cities. Owing to its distance from the open sea and position on the south-eastern portion of the European continent, Romania has a climate that is temperate and continental, with four distinct seasons. The average annual temperature is 11 °C in the south and 8 °C in the north.
