The climate in Saint Petersburg

Located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea in northwest Russia, Saint Petersburg is a city with a population of over 4.8 million. Founded in 1703 by the Tsar Peter the Great, the city is a major European cultural centre and an important port on the Baltic Sea. The Historic Centre and related monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is also home to The Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world. Other popular attractions include Catherine Palace, Kazan Cathedral, and Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral. Saint Petersburg has a humid continental climate with a cool summer subtype due to the influence of the Baltic Sea cyclones. Summers are cool, humid, and short. Winters are normally long and cold but have frequent warm spells. The average high temperature in summer is around 23°C. In winter, the average low temperature is around -9°C, and highs are around -3°C. Average annual precipitation is about 661mm. On average, there are 118 days with snow cover a year.
