Slovenia is a nation state in southern Central Europe. It borders Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Croatia to the south and southeast and Hungary to the northeast. It has a population of 2.05 million. It is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union. Its capital and largest city is Ljubljana and has many important Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, with several important works of the native born architect Jože Ple?nik. Other attractions include the Julian Alps with picturesque Lake Bled and the So?a Valley, as well as the nation's highest peak, Mount Triglav. Its climate is influenced by the continental climate. The Slovene Littoral enjoys the sub-Mediterranean climate, while the Alpine climate is found in the north-western part of the country. Snow is quite frequent in winter.
