With a population of 4 million, Johannesburg is the most populous city in South Africa and the provincial capital of Gauteng. Its location on the mineral-rich range of hills makes it the source of a major gold and diamond trade. The city of lights is also Africa’s most modern city and recently added many tourist attractions as it has become a popular destination for foreign visitors. It offers various options to visitors wishing to learn about the city’s history with the Apartheid Museum or the Hector Pieterson Museum. The theme park, Gold Reef City is highly appreciated by visitors as it features attractions offering a representation of mining life back in the 19th century. The city enjoys a subtropical highland climate characterised by hot summer days followed by cold evenings. The daily average temperature in January is 20°C and 10°C in July, the coldest month of the year.
