Seoul’s climate

Found on the Han River in northeastern South Korea, Seoul is the capital and largest metropolis in the country with a population of more than 10 million. The city’s history dates back more than 2,000 years when it was founded by Baekje in 18BC. Today, it is a leading and rapidly growing global city. The capital is home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeok Palace, Hwaseong Fortress, Jonhmyo Shrine, and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Seoul has a humid continental/subtropical transitional climate with characteristics of both climatic types. The months of November through April have a continental climate while the rest of the year experiences a subtropical climate with elements of a tropical wet/dry climate. Summers are hot and humid with an average high of 29°C though higher temperatures are possible. The city also experiences the East Asian monsoon during the summer months where almost 400mm of rain fall each month during July and August. In winter, the temperatures are cold with an average high of 2°C and lows of -5°C. Average annual precipitation is 1,450mm with the majority falling between the months of May to September. Snow occurs an average of 28 days each year during winter.
