Bordered by France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein, Switzerland is a country with a population of over 8 million. Geographically divided by the Alps, Swiss Plateau, and the Jura, most of the population is found on the Plateau. The country is the birthplace of the Red Cross and is home to a number of international organisations such as the second largest UN office. Popular destinations include the cities of Zurich, Geneva, Basel, and Bern as well as the mountain ranges for skiing. Switzerland has a temperate climate that varies between locations. The mountains can have cold conditions while the southern tip of the country often benefits from Mediterranean conditions. Summers are generally warm and humid. Winters are less humid and tend to be quite cold. Precipitation is spread throughout the year. The weather phenomenon called fohn can occur year-round, bringing a warm wind of low humidity to the north of the Alps.
