The smallest country in North Africa, Tunisia is located on the Mediterranean Sea and has an estimated population of almost 10.7 million. While the Northern part of the country is situated along the coast and has fertile soil, the south of the country is part of the Sahara Desert. Tourists can enjoy excursions into the desert, visiting the capital city of Tunis, or relaxing at one of the many beach resorts. A particularly attractive area is the island of Djerba. The climate is temperate in the north with hot, dry summers and mild and rainy winters. Rainfall decreases heading south. The south is semiarid and merges into the Sahara. The weather is hot and dry though temperatures at night during the winter may be quite cold.
