In the eastern central Lowlands on the north bank of the Firth of Tay, Dundee is the fourth largest city in Scotland with a population of 156,600. Dundee has been a centre of scientific activities. The RPS Discovery, an Antarctic exploration vessel built in Dundee is now in the city’s harbour, and biomedical and technological industries play a large role in the city’s economy. Popular landmarks include St. Mary’s Tower, which is the oldest building in the city, several castles, and the new Victoria and Albert Museum. The climate in Dundee is oceanic. The average high temperature in summer is between 16 and 19°C. In winter, high temperatures are around 6°C and lows around 0°C. Average precipitation is about 700mm a year.
