Visiting Leicester - Leicester

Description of Leicester

Leicester, the largest city of the East Midlands, is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United Kingdom (after London of course) and was founded and named by the Romans as Ratae Coritanorum. Most of all, the surrounding villages are very picturesque and quite pleasant. To sum up, whatever your interests are, Leicester and its surrounding areas have everything to offer.

Inside info

‘Belgrave’, the Asian area of Leicester, reflects the heterogeneity of the city. This area has a large, vibrant Asian community featuring the Golden Mile (because of the amount of shops selling gold jewellery). Having a walk around this part of the city will provide you with a pleasant change of scenery. The National Space Centre of Leicester is not only recommended for space fanatics. Despite the centre being a charity, (and therefore, does not get any governmental grants to look after the artefacts on display),the stars and comets’ phenomenon is wonderfully explained, in an entertaining way. However, be aware that extra hidden costs might occur (e.g. parking, admittance to shows), and that there is no hot food available. Leicester Comedy Festival takes place from the 5th to the 21st of February. The program includes stand-up shows, comedies, poetry & spoken word, comic theatre, photographic and art exhibitions, and children's shows. The Preview Show is on Friday January 15th. Held since 1994, this event is one of the best comedy festivals in the world, providing a lot of fun for the whole family.
