Winters are mild and it holds the record of the mildest winter in January 2003 when temperatures reached 17°C. Even though hot temperatures were recorded in the last decade (37°C in August 2003), temperatures in the summer rarely exceed 22°C. With 640 mm of rain every year, precipitation is below the national average. Maidstone is mentioned many times in Ian Fleming's novel Moonraker.
