Located on the River Usk in Gwent in southeast Wales, Newport is the third largest city in the country with a population of 145,700. A port since medieval times, it was a major exporter of coal during the 19th century. Today, the city is a centre for technology companies and has a flourishing local music scene. Popular attractions include the castle, the cathedral, George Street Bridge, Riverfront Arts Centre, and Westgate Square. Newport has a temperate climate that is sheltered from weather extremes.
