Situated on the south coast of Devon in South West England at the mouths of the River Plym to the east and the River Tamar to the west, Plymouth has a population of 259,000. Plymouth has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age. Today, the city’s economy is influenced by shipbuilding and the service industry. It also has ferry links to France and Spain. Popular attractions are the Royal Citadel and Smeaton’s Tower, a lighthouse that is open to the public. Plymouth has a temperate oceanic climate that is generally wetter and milder than the rest of England. The annual mean temperature is 11°C. The average high in summer is between 17 and 19°C, and in winter, it is about 8°C. Average precipitation is about 1,000mm.
