Situated 22 miles north of central London in southern Hertfordshire in the East of England, St Albans is a popular dormitory town within the London commuter belt and has a population of over 140,600. A settlement of pre-Roman origin, the city was named after Saint Alban, the first British Christian martyr. Today, the city benefits from a strong local economy, a highly skilled workforce, and an excellent location for rail, roads, and airports. Popular attractions include St Albans Abbey, the 15th century Clock Tower, and the remains of the Roman wall. Like much of the UK, St Albans has an oceanic climate that is characterised by warm summers and mild winters. The average high temperature in summer is about 22°C. In winter, the average high is near 6°C with lows near 5°C. The average annual rainfall is 565mm, lower than many parts of the United Kingdom. Precipitation is spread out fairly evenly over the year.
