Situated near the boundary between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands, Stirling is a city clustered around a large fortress and medieval old-town by the River Forth. It has a population of 33,710. Once the capital of Scotland, the city is currently a centre for local government, higher education, retail, and light industry. Popular attractions include the Stirling Castle with its Great Hall and Renaissance Palace, the Wallace Monument, and the Church of the Holy Rude. Stirling has a climate typical of central Scotland that is cool, cloudy, and damp. The warm air of the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic helps to keep the temperature fairly moderate over the year. The average high temperature in summer is about 23°C. In winter, the average high is about 7°C with lows near 3°C. Rain is spread out over the year and is quite common.
