The climate in Houston

Situated in southeast Texas, Houston is the fourth most populous city in the United States with a population of 2.1 million in the city centre and over 6.1 million in the metropolitan area. Founded in 1836 near the banks of Buffalo Bayou, it became a city in 1837. The city later became home to the Texas Medical Center, which is the world’s largest concentration of healthcare and research institutions, and NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Popular attractions include the Theater District, which is a 17-block area in the centre of downtown, the Space Center Houston, the Galleria, and the Downtown Aquarium. Houston has a humid subtropical climate. Although it is not part of “Tornado Alley”, supercell thunderstorms in the area sometimes produce tornadoes. The average high temperature in summer is about 34°C with 90% humidity. Due to these conditions, thunderstorms are common. The average high temperature in winter is about 18°C with lows near 6°C. Annual precipitation is about 1,264mm with rain spread throughout the year.
