The climate in Washington, D.C.

Formally known as the District of Columbia, Washington, D.C. is located on the Potomac River on the east coast of the United States. It has a population of 632,323 in the district and 5.7 million in the metropolitan area. Originally, most of D.C. was known as Georgetown, a city in Maryland. In 1791, this area expanded and was joined with a part of Virginia to form a federal city without a state, the capital of the country. The city is rich in American history and culture, hosting many government buildings. Popular attractions include the Smithsonian Institution with its 19 museums and the National Zoo, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the White House. Washington, D.C. has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid with an average high temperature of about 31°C. The combination of heat and humidity often causes thunderstorms. Springs and autumns are warm. Winters are cool with an average high temperature of 6°C and lows near -2°C. Annual precipitation is near 1,007mm with an average of 39cm of snow.
