Vietnam's climate

The easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is bordered by China, Laos, Cambodia, and the South China Sea. The thirteenth most populous country in the world, it has a population of about 90.3 million. The country is hilly and densely forested, with only 20% level land. Mountains cover 40% of the land area, and tropical forests cover around 42%. Vietnam has a fast growing economy and is also attracting more and more tourists. Popular destinations include Hanoi, Saigon, Hué, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Hoi An and My Son, and the coastal regions. The northern regions of the country have a humid subtropical climate with humidity staying around 84% year-round. In the south, the climate is mostly tropical savanna with high humidity and distinct wet and dry seasons. The hottest months are typically May through August with average high temperatures around 33°C. The coolest months are December through February with highs near 21°C and lows near 13°C. Annual rainfall is substantial in all regions with an average of 1,200 to 3,000mm a year depending on location. The summer has the wettest months.
